Former Cyclone Abdel Nader reportedly waived by the Boston Celtics | Sports

Iowa State redshirt senior Abdel Nader blocks Virginia redshirt senior Malcolm Brogdon at the Sweet 16 on March 25 in Chicago. Nader made 5 rebounds in the game. ISU fell 84-71.

Former Iowa State player Abdel Nader has made strides since joining the Boston Celtics organization, but he was still on the bubble as to whether he’d make the roster for the 2018-19 season.

The Celtics elected to waive Nader on Saturday, according to a report from Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

The timing of Nader’s departure is important, because after August 1, Nader’s contract would have been fully guaranteed for the 2018-19 season.

Nader did have a partial guarantee, meaning he received $450 thousand of his contract despite being waived.

Redshirt senior Abdel Nader passes the ball in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Little Rock on March 19. Nader topped 1,000 career points after ISU’s win against Kansas. Iowa State won 78-61 against Little Rock and will face Virginia in the Sweet 16.

In his first NBA season, the former Cyclone averaged 10.9 minutes, 3.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 48 games played. Nader also participated in 11 playoff games, scoring 12 points.
