Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown picked up a technical on a strange play against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, after which he and star Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic exchanged words.
The play started when DeAndre Jordan threw down an enormous dunk, hanging on the rim for a couple of beats too long. Meanwhile, off-camera, Doncic hit the ground and held his back in apparent pain, then hopped up and exchanged words with Brown.
The aftermath: A technical on Brown, a technical on Jordan (which allowed him to stay in the game after picking one up in the first half), and no free throws for either team.
Here’s a look at the play.

Both sides appear to have a valid complaint. Brown certainly did stop in his tracks, and he appears to lower his shoulder into Doncic visibly in a couple of camera angles. Doncic (who had previously been cooking the Celtics) appeared to be fine, despite his reaction.
Oh, and Jordan was assessed a technical, but not the type of technical that counts when you already have one (as noted by Jay King, that’s the correct call, strangely enough).
Just an update for anyone wondering whether there would be Celtics beef with Doncic: The answer is yes.
