The Pickup: Brian Scalabrine tries to be Brad Stevens’ personal driver

Brian Scalabrine drives around Boston with Brad Stevens and talks the new Auerbach Center,  and Scal tries to convince Stevens to make him his full time driver.

The Celtics team we thought we’d see last season and got a glimpse of last fall will be back on the court Sept. 28 in their preseason opener against the Charlotte Hornets in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Boston opens against Charlotte at the Dean Smith Center, home of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Kyrie Irving, out since March, and Gordon Hayward, who missed all but five minutes of the season opener, are expected to be back with rising stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and the rest of the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last spring and is favored to reach the NBA Finals in 2019.

The Celtics preseason home opener is against the Hornets on Sept. 30 at TD Garden, followed by a home game against the LeBron James-less Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 2. The preseason concludes with a visit to Cleveland Oct. 6.

All four games will be televised live on NBC Sports Boston. Mike Gorman, Tommy Heinsohn and Brian Scalabrine will call the action along with sideline reporter Abby Chin. Kyle Draper, Heinsohn and Scalabrine will provide pregame and postgame coverage. Tickets for all games played at TD Garden will go on sale at a later date.

The Boston Celtics have reportedly waived guard Rodney Purvis after acquiring him in a trade that sent Abdel Nader to Oklahoma City.

Purvis’ contract was worth about $1.3 million and was non-guaranteed. The Celtics traded Nader, who had a partial guarantee of $450k if waived by August 1st. Instead of eating the extra money on Nader’s deal, Danny Ainge sent him to the Thunder.

The Celtics now save more money on their luxury tax payment, a threshold they crossed after signing Marcus Smart to a four-year $52 million extension.

This roster move was expected from Boston, who’s offseason moves might be wrapped up all together before the month of August. With last year’s absolute overhaul of the roster, Celtics fans can sit back and relax as they gear up for a season returning many familiar faces.
