NBC Sports Regional Networks launched a team-focused mobile app Tuesday that will include live streaming of Celtics games for authenticated NBC Sports Boston subscribers.
The app, called MyTeams by NBC Sports, provides customized access to content — including stories, video clips, and podcasts — of what the user identifies as their favorite teams. Fans select their favorite team or teams in order of preference, to create in essence a customized sports site.
“The app is a way to get very deep very quickly on a particular team,’’ said Matt Murphy, senior vice president, platforms and strategy, for NBC Sports’ regional networks. “There are others that have clips, write articles, certainly have podcasts. We’re the one that can do it all, and do it all in one place.’’
Content on the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins will be available on the MyTeams app. The Celtics content should be particularly appealing since the network is the team’s regional broadcast partner and can present live game broadcasts on the app.
“We have staff devoted to the Patriots, we still have staff to Red Sox and so forth,’’ said Murphy, who spearheaded and oversaw the development and implementation of MyTeams by NBC Sports. “We will still continue to go deep with the articles, and podcasts and clips, but there will be a little more there with the Celtics because we do have the live stream.’’
The app’s interface makes for easy navigation between all of a fan’s favorite teams. In that sense, the app’s launch is timely given that the Celtics opened on Tuesday night (albeit on TBS rather than NBC Sports Boston), the Patriots are in the heart of their season, the Bruins are off to an impressive start, and the Red Sox are battling for a trip to the World Series.
“It is our belief that to discover the content that you want, the best way to find it is not to search around for it, especially when there’s so much going on at a given time, but to have it appear when you open the app,’’ said Murphy.
“Our goal from an editorial standpoint is to always present the user with the best piece of content on that particular time of day on the app, based on what they are looking for. If you open this app at 8:42 [on a night when the Celtics are playing a game], you will get the stream of that game. If you open it 4 a.m., maybe the best option at that moment is a Patriots podcast in the morning after a game, or a detailed column on Alex Cora.’’
Murphy was asked what the difference is between using the app and logging on to NBC Sports Boston’s website.
“There absolutely are people who want to sit at a desk and consume content that way,’’ said Murphy. “But we also know how prevalent it is for people to use their phones or other devices to get the content they want. The same content will be available on both, but the difference is what is your preferred device and how is it presented to you.’’
