That’s the bold statement from Fox Sports analyst Chris Broussard, who claims Hayward is the most “expendable” player on Boston’s roster.
The Celtics have welcomed back Hayward this season after he went down with a gruesome ankle injury last year.
He has admitted the issue is still affecting him as he works back up to full match fitness while Boston have made a stuttering start to the new campaign.
There was some relief the week before opening tip-off against the Philadelphia 76ers when Irving announced in front of a Celtics crowd that he intends to re-sign with Boston in 2019.
There had been much speculation surrounding his future, with the New York Knicks strongly linked.
However, Broussard claims there is still a strong feeling that Irving could go back against his word.
The Celtics are the favourites to come out of the Eastern Conference this season and battle in the NBA Finals with their current roster.
But Broussard adds Boston should consider trading one of Irving or Hayward before the deadline.
“Kyrie, even though he said he wants to stay in Boston, I was speaking to an executive last night who said ‘I think he’s going to end up somewhere else’,” Broussard said on Undisputed.
“Because it’s not just about Kyrie, it’s about Boston.
“What if they don’t get to the Finals? They’re not off to a great start this early but… what if they don’t get to the Eastern Conference Finals with Kyrie?
“You made it without him, you’ve got all these max guys. Will they want to give him five years, $190m with the injury history that he’s had?
“If they decide we can’t have all these max guys or we want to move on from Kyrie, I don’t know that he’s there the whole year.
“Because are you going to trade him before the deadline in February rather than lose him for nothing as a free agent, or do you trade somebody else?
“Like if I were them, maybe you try to trade Gordon Hayward.
“I think Jayson Tatum is better than Gordon Hayward.
“Jaylen Brown I think will be if he’s not already … and I think (Al) Horford’s more valuable to the team than Hayward.
“So to me, Hayward’s expendable. It could be all sorts of upheaval.”
