Mike Gorman announces contract extension to remain with Celtics

During his weekly appearance on The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich program, Mike Gorman explained where he’s been recently, and revealed the excellent news that in the big picture, he’s not going anywhere for a while.

Gorman, the Celtics’ television play-by-play voice since 1981, announced on the show that he recently signed a new three-year contract to remain in the role for NBC Sports Boston.

He also said that his recent absences from the broadcast were in a sense one of the perks of the new deal.

“I was able to negotiate as part of my deal that I get to take a little bit more time off on some less desirable road trips,’’ said Gorman. “Over Thanksgiving, it was three games in four nights over three different cities. So I took that off, Kyle [Draper] filled in admirably, and I’ll be back on Friday.’’

Gorman, who turned 73 on November 24, acknowledged that sometimes the longer road trips can weigh on him.

“The landing at 3:30 in the morning at Hanscom [Air Force Base] gets old after a while,’’ said Gorman,

Tommy Heinsohn, who has been the color analyst alongside Gorman all these years, significantly cut down his travel schedule years ago. Brian Scalabrine is the color analyst on road games.
